In a remarkable blend of strength, discipline, and community service, Melanie Costa, affectionately known as “The Pit Bull,” has once again proven that tenacity knows no bounds. Melanie, a resident of Norton, Massachusetts, has been awarded the prestigious Women Cops Who Box Special Award, a recognition that underscores her dedication both in and out of the boxing ring. Costa’s inspiring journey reflects not only her commitment to boxing but also her unwavering support for her community as a law enforcement officer.
Melanie’s dual life as a police officer and a boxer is a testament to her multifaceted character. “Where, when I am not training, I have the honor to be a law enforcement officer,” she shared with WBAN. For the past three years, she has served the Norton community in a full-time capacity, relishing the unique challenges that come with law enforcement. This profession allows her to meet new people regularly, providing fresh opportunities that keep her motivated. It’s clear that the skills needed in boxing—resilience, focus, and adaptability—are mirrored in her approach to policing.
Melanie’s passion for boxing didn’t manifest overnight; rather, it evolved over a remarkably dedicated seventeen-year journey. Starting her athletic experience at the tender age of ten with kenpo karate, she learned valuable lessons about confidence, respect, and pushing beyond limitations. At twelve, her curiosity and passion for boxing ignited as she walked into Mendes Tang Soo Do. Seeing boxers perfecting their punches and seeing their skills in the gym created an instant interest in the sport.
She told WBAN that it was challenging learning how to properly punch etc, but she never gave up. When she was 13, she had her first amateur boxing match. She loved the competition and it turned into her desire to continue to move up in the sport
Despite the obstacles, including the historically limited recognition of women’s boxing, Melanie, remained undeterred. The announcement of female boxing weight classes at the 2012 Olympic Games created a pivotal moment in her career. With renewed determination, she intensified her training and transitioned from an unknown to a formidable presence, consistently placing at national Olympic trials. Among her impressive accolades are multiple victories in the National Golden Gloves and a commendable performance at the Olympic Trials in both the 112 and 125 weight classes.
Her dedication culminated in her decision to turn professional, signing with CES Boxing Promotions and winning her debut match by a second-round knockout in May 2023. Currently training at Big Six Boxing Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, Costa enjoys the familial camaraderie while enduring rigorous workouts and sparring sessions.
As Melanie Costa embarks on her professional boxing journey, she carries with her the support of her family and community, who have been instrumental every step of the way. Boxing has illuminated her life, equipping her with invaluable life skills that transcend the ring. With her strong work ethic and positive attitude, there’s no doubt that she will continue to break barriers and inspire others along the way.
In receiving the Women Cops Who Box Special Award, she not only celebrates her own achievements but also shines a light on the evolving narrative of women in sports and law enforcement.
