(AUGUST 2) Earlier today, WBAN ran across an intriguing story about Christine Ongare, an amateur boxer from Nairobi, Kenya. I am almost sure of it that many have not heard of her, as this was the first time I came across her story. Ongare was born on February 26, 1993, in Eastlands, Nairobi, Kenya.
So we wanted the boxing community to meet Christine Ongare, of Kenya, who is 5-3-0 as an amateur and who made the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as a flyweight representing Kenya, with the misfortune that the Olympics have been canceled this year due to Covid-19 Virus and the Pandemic is has caused worldwide.
In many various articles from the area of Kenya mainly, they gave some nice coverage of Ongare and what she has done in boxing thus far.
In 2020, when Ongare was interviewed on the online media, she spoke about her beginnings in boxing and the struggles she has gone through in the sport.
She said the following: Ongare was born to a single mother, and she herself became a mother at the tender age of 12 years old. Ongare having to go through a very hard and tough life throughout her years in Kenya, she doesn’t like to say much more about becoming pregnant at 12.
Ongare said that she did have the child and that her mother is raising that child.
Ongare said that her mother struggled to pay bills and for her school fees, and prior to boxing she got involved in sport that included football, and acrobatics—but once she got a taste of boxing, that was her love in life to pursue.
Before qualifying for the Olympics, she told the Olympic Channel that sealing a place at the games would create opportunities for her to excel. She feels that qualifying will open doors for her.
