Ortiz of the SF Chronicle wrote the following about Talmadge when she competed in the amateurs, “Cynthia Talmadge was used to displaying her grace and agility on a dance floor, not a ring apron. A baseball player and a ballroom dancer hardly seem like typical candidates to boast the title of Golden Gloves champions today. But part of the appeal of the yearly amateur boxing tournament is that fighters from all backgrounds get a chance at some brief glory, and this year’s edition is no different. Barefield and Talmadge both won close decisions Saturday night at the Cow Palace to earn their first San Francisco Golden Gloves championships as the tournament closed out its 71st run with 13 fights. “In her wildest dreams Talmadge probably didn’t imagine herself sporting a bloody nose — and smiling all the while. Rhythm dancing, her principal avocation while a student at the University of Arizona, rarely results in the participants wiping blood off their faces. But that’s very much what the 119-pound Talmadge was doing after a ferocious three rounds against Cleo Chan of King’s Gym.”
